Pretty interesting day for me today. Managed to hack my monitor and fix the too bright monitor screen issue it was facing.
I got this Dell P1110 21’ CRT screen from somebody, for free and noticed that it has issues of really bright screen, even at brightness turned down to 0, I could see the black screens as bright grey. Basically it was awfully bright. Most older CRT’s from Sony, Dell I googled have the problem of “excessive bright monitor screen” or “monitor too bright” issues. Although I had a spare 15” crt working properly nothing beats this big beast. Its huge and heavy too!! So I googled up for “Dell P1110 too bright” term and found this link : http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19549 after spending few hours trying to figure out what was happening in the thread, I managed to hack or re-program it to have lower brightness.Re-writing this tutorial to save user some time of going over the entier thread at the forums. Basically you need 2 things (I used the software method rather than the resistor mod method, as I did not have to open the monitor at all and saved me headache and labor):
1. Rs232 to TTL Converter Cable/ Jig , I will explain how I made my own jig for $0 !!
2. Windas Software which I got from http://www.geocities.com/gregua/windas/install.html

Let’s first make the RS 232 to TTL Converter Cable/Jig or ECS as referred to later on in the tutorial.. Without this you would not be able to use the software!! So either make the jig of get a jig from someplace like ebay.

Reasons Why DMOZWill Eventually Die One Day!

In desperation, it seems DMOZ launched an Official DMOZ Blog today. Here is a brief quote from it:

“We thought now was the right time to open the door and start a conversation with the Web community about what’s happening with the largest human-edited directory.

We intend to use this blog to:

- Provide authentic messages about DMOZ and the efforts of our volunteer community.
- Highlight enhancements, both current and future.
- Allow editors to showcase their categories and describe, in their own words, why DMOZ is so important.
- Recruit new editors. If you have access to the Web and are passionate about a category, find out how to apply.

Additionally we want to hear from you.

What do you think about DMOZ? Why do you use the directory or data? Is there something you would like to see fixed? When you’ve been around as long as we have, some people are bound to have great things to say, while others might have a few choice words based on their personal experience. O O Big mistake,it will actually open doors for those editors that want to do some sucking up and get in the good books of a select few or for webmasters to try to find out which editor will accept their bribe to get their site listed in Dmoz. Instead of helping dmoz, it will actually make it worse by trying to show webmasters something that in reality does not exist.

Really!!!! does staff from AOL want to really hear about the truth and improve dmoz ?

Good news is Wordpress 2.3 has been released and can be downloaded from http://wordpress.org/download.  I eagerly waited for it for 4 days as my plans for this blog were to use wordpress and no use coding template in 2.2.3 than convert it to 2.3. So, this blog is proudly running Wordpress 2.3 . Here is how it came into existence.

Last night It took me about 3 hrs to setup the blog and merge the theme with the blog. Yes, that is correct I do all my theme customizations and coding. Its better than hiring someone to do a messy job which might take days or months to be completed. Anyways I haven’t noticed anything new in wordpress 2.3 so cannot say “Wow wordpress is so much cooler now” !!! It still makes my pages XHTML invalid if I post directly using the Editor they got for adding posts, so every time I have to write a post in word (hmm good since it checks my poor spellings too) and copy it to dreamweaver, make it xhtml valid and copy paste the code dreamweaver makes. And the posts and stories are than XTHML valid. Keep the site Validated all the time. For how long I can keep up with that is another story.

Guess what, I got the computer from the dude for like 100$ with 15 inchie CRT , and it’s a Emachine T5016 . I get home, open it up and guess what ? Its filled with dust and what not, took me 3 hrs to clean the computer, actually washed it !!! Now I know that sounds stupid, but washed only the heatink it had on cpu. And another thing that was missing was a Thermal Paste from the CPU, damnit never run a PC without the PASTE !! Anyways first time around I booted after cleaning it did not boot so I was like omg I killed it !! So opened it up again and it is this time I noticed that cpu had no paste on it, and was running hot as probably heatsink was not doing what its supposed to do. So, applied Artic Silver 5 , which I had bought 8 months back while assembling my Core2 Duo PC in winter.
So, got everything cleaned and booted the machine. Had some pirated version of Windows XP which is a NO-NO in my book, cause never mess with Bill Gates !!. So, I loaded my copy of XP on it, Validated it online and installed IE 7 , which I am not going to use anyways, as I like Firefox.. Also loaded Office on it validated it too just in case billy hacks my pc to see if I got original stuff loaded…!!! (more…)

So, here are the updates related to my computer situation at school.
Got in contact with the guy selling the 17” monitor for 10$, as expected it was not LCD but CRT, so I said no to him, but now I am thinking I might get it, because I cannot seem to find any cheap LCD maybe below 100$.
About the 2.93 Ghz machine, talked to the guy and struck a deal at $100 only without his 15” monitor (CRT) that he was selling with it. It happens to be TS5010 Emachines Model. With only 80 Gig hdd though. So, if you got a HDD lying around and want to dispose of it and works, you know who to contact …..!! .
Also got I think 30 feet Ethernet cable from department, lying somewhere!!!, it’s a cheap one though might not give me good connection but will try. (more…)
