Learnt a neat trick to update/upgrade Php 4.4.7 on my test server to php 5.2.5 running centos 5 and direct admin as control panel. Took me a while to google up all the answers, so thought why not just put a small tutorial to install php 5.2.5 on apache2 based machine with direct admin on it.

First for sake of it run

yum install libxml-devel (this command on centos upgrades libxml or installs it if its mising and trust me you need to do this cause it saves time, otherwise php compile will end abruptly giving error :

Configuring extensions
checking whether to enable LIBXML support… yes
checking libxml2 install dir… no
checking for xml2-config path…
configure: error: xml2-config not found. Please check your libxml2 installation.

*** There was an error while trying to configure php. Check the configure.php file

What a not so great weekend start, as I was afraid that the HDD (hard drive) of my computer would not last for long cause of the clicks and the efforts it was making to read data recently. Good thing is no important data was on it, but bad thing is now I do not have a working computer for my desk at college. Which sucks, and will atleast cost me 100$ to get new hdd (including shipping). Since, computer uses SATA HDD it should be able to accept either SATA or IDE hdd too, so will see if I can grab some cheaper hdd.

I was waiting for X-mas to maybe upgrade my existing home machine with latest motherboard and few extra gigs of ram, but this has totally changed my plan.

Well things like these happen I suppose and since there is no warranty on the hdd, as it’s an antique e-machine!

Nice little trick to block your sister, friend, girlfriend, dad, little brother (it does wonders if you block their favorite gaming sites, and watch them go nuts ) from visiting a site and redirecting to some random website, or playing a nice prank on some non-computer savvy person.

For Xp Windows users:

Go to windows/system32/drivers/etc open the hosts file in it, with wordpad or notepad.

Add an entry at the bottom where it says :

127.0.0.1 localhost

66.102.9.147 www.myspace.com

What it will do is redirect the person from myspace website to ip “66.102.9.147” which is the ip for google.com , you can do this trick to any sites you want just keep adding them in the next successive lines.
