Blogs & Blogging – How it works for a business – IABC Social Media Conference

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

This long blog post is all about blogging, so grab a box of popcorn (or a cheeseburger) if you are interested to know more about blogs. Recently I was presented with rather interesting opportunity involving speaking about blogs and what you can do with them.  IABC Saskatoon  organized “Social Media 2.0” event aimed at providing more insight into the working of various “tools” available for companies that they can use to boost  their social presence. More details of events can be found at IABC’s website: http://saskatoon.iabc.com/archives/645 “IABC Social Media Conference”.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional writer, so you will see weirdness in the sentences as usual  J , bear with me or you can put some music on, to make it less painful in case you are still interested to proceed further.  Do not worry copyright found at the bottom, I did not forgot about that :) .

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk a bit more about blogs and what I had to share to a very keen group of wonderful ladies, who were kind enough to put up with whatever I had to sayJ. If anyone from that discussion is reading this post, do not worry there was no “jibber-jabberish” thing said. I tried to stick to the plan of not making myself look like a foolJ. I think it worked but dunno will wait for the survey results. I will try to post the results or stats I should say when they are made available to me.

Before you guys lose interest there you can contact me via my site: http://www.a1whs.com/support.php , the email from there comes directly to me, one thing about the web I learnt the hard way is, ‘not to mention my email address on sites’.  Doing that, acts like a magnet for spammers/bots that will not stop at any cost. So, a simple tip do not put your email address on any random website, try to create an image if possible and link to that instead, or maybe insert image if you are allowed to on that particular site. Avoid the normal format of ‘youremail@spammeplease.com’ …. Ok that name sounded interesting, hence just ended up buying it even before I could complete this post. I have an idea for that domain already. Will share, more info in separate post.

I do regret that at the social media event those who were talking about a topic did not get a change to go around to different tables to discuss about technologies they have not interacted with. For example, me!! I wanted to check out the Twitter session, but alas that was not to be.  Hopefully one day I will get around learning more about Twitter and how it works. Have used instead Digg and other social bookmarking sites (which is what I think Twitter is). Facebook, I was not really much interested in, for I do not like Facebook much one of the many reasons is listed in one of the other posts here at bloggy.  I wished that there would have been a round set aside where all the speakers get to meet up and discuss and learn about technologies they have not used. More time for each individual table per round would have been excellent, because I had some serious session going and quite interesting questions were raised. Knowledge sharing was what interests me the most. I realized that few know of blogs as “what a 17 year old would post on”, I am thinking now, maybe that is what the younger generations call “myspace” , a personal blog?

Few things about blogs and examples of how it can be used to power your business/website:-

  1. Blogs if setup right can be used to power your entire site. Example(s): http://www.phpyproxyhost.com/ my personal webhosting company, http://saskatoon.iabc.com/ << where the social event took place. Just a note to self and webmaster of IABC to update the WordPress backend. It’s outdated and not really secure.
  2. Blogs add additional features to your website, which normally are not available in simple site that are just html pages. Features include:

Facebook acting up – Just me or Facebook is messed up ?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Microblog entry #2 Stardate w/e .

These are the reasons why I do not trust 3rd party applications and social media stuff. They break on you and you can yourself not fix such an issue. Well facebook has been in a mess for me for quite some time now. What happens is :

Random entries appear on my wall, not ordered by date at all. Just pure randomness. Example look at the picture below : Note the dates ? I am like what ? Why is it not ordered according to newest entry > oldest entry ? How hard can that be for some giant like facebook  ? Anyways if yours is also acting up and are not too happy with facebook or not a great fan of facebook feel free to share your experience and thoughts here.

PS: I have faded/removed pictures and names of people to protect their privacy but facebook would not care anyways about privacy !!

7 hrs to get google indexed ! Scrap that 28 minutes to get Google Indexed !

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I might be off here with the hrs. maybe 6 hrs. ? But the most recent post about  SEO Compatibility Certificate was on google’s search result in 7 hrs., hence the title “7 hrs to get google indexed !”  Now that is uberly cool I think :) . Lets see when google indexes this post .

Instead of making it a 2 liner post, why not add more ?

Well today decided to finally upgrade my wordpress version here on bloggy bloggy to the latest version 2.8.6 ,  I am sure that in a week or lesser time there will be another wordpress update coming in. So get ready to upgrade again. WordPress is great tool but I wish that it would not have to go through all these updates/patches every  2 weeks or so, now I gotta check for my plug ins upgrades, and upgrade them too at the same.

UPDATE: Took about 28 minutes (or when i checked to be frank to see it in google results, excellent now that is one fast GoogleBot even faster than speedracer I would say)

Seriously a SEO Compatibility Certificate for a Website ?

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Ok I had to come here to maybe do micro blogging this time !! Stumbled upon a site which had an icon saying its “SEO comptaible”. I was like “really” omg that is too cool to not click !! !

So… I click on the little icon and am greated with this certificate. Seeing the certificate I burst out laughing, some might call me a fool/idiot for that but come on “seo compatibility certificate” ? What’s next ? ” Certificate to certify one’s site is not a Cheeseburger ” ???

Anyways here is the image, I did search for the company on google for major keyword terms , did not pan out too well for the site. I am assuming the site that is reaping the benifit is not the one that got Certified that its Seo Compatible , but the site who actually came up with the idea of the crazy “Seo Compatibility Certificate” !! Soon Bloggybloggy will come up with “some sort of certification !!!

So how many of you are “Seo Compatible” ? Kudos to sitesubmit.ca to actually come up with such an idea ! Image source : sitesubmit.ca

Government of Saskatchewan Site Down !!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Hmm… just when you need to look for something you find the site down, was looking to see update on swine flu cases at Government of Saskatchewan’s website, but its spitting out errors !! Example :

http://www.gov.sk.ca/Common/error.htm?aspxerrorpath=/Default.aspx is what you go to when you hit > http://www.gov.sk.ca/

I hope its just me getting the error, if not , damn why would someone try to do testing or development if its not a hack in the middle of the day ?

Google.com Does not Work for Firefox a Simple Fix

Monday, June 29th, 2009

So not sure if its a problem with the windows OS or just that google.com does not like users from canada browsing it. But so after a fresh install of Vista Enterprise 64 bit on my computer and after installing Firefox or IE , the search box just kept redirecting me to Google.com instead of Google.ca. Maybe Firefox has no addon for google.ca ? Either ways, got frustrated so decided to hack my hosts file found at

Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ folder

Editing the hosts file with wordpad I added the following line to it after the line  ::1             localhost
74.125.91.104   google.com

Now that ip before google.com is the one i got after pinging google.com to do so and grab the ip you go to for google.ca search go to >start>run(or search now) > type cmd and hit return.

Now in the cmd window (the black window) type ping google.ca and look at the ip you see for google.ca , now this is the IPNUMBER

Now edit the hosts file and insert this line THEIPNUMBER   google.com to the last line you see in that file. So it looks something like

74.125.91.104   google.com

This little trick should also help those from different regions and using firefox search option and having timeout or non-working google.com. Simple ping the google domain you go to for your searches and insert its ip before google.com in the hosts file and you shall have search capabilities once again from within Firefox or IE itself.
