Interested in getting Snow Leopard (SL) 10.6.6 on your Samsung R480 Laptop ? Well .. read on..

To get Snow leopard 10.6.6 on your Samsung R480 laptop you need :

Audio Fix (click and download)

Video/Graphics Fix (click and download)

Keyboard/Trackpad Fix (you might need a usb keyboard/mouse initially; unless you copy the kexts to the install on the usb itself , I have not tried it so try it and let everyone know if that worked ) (click and download)

Multibeast (from Tony’s site) to boot. (click and download, in case the newer multibeast does not work)

Original Snow Leopard 10.6.3 , sorry this tutorial is not for those who are pirates and are into software piracy. So go and buy SL before you continue on.

iBoot (again from Tony’s site)

USB Disk/Drive ( minimum 8 gb)

Fix/Alternative to Sleep Crashes (sleep does not work great, fix at the bottom of article)

Dimmer (from apple’s site to control laptops screen brightness, trust me you need it samsung’s screen is way too bright).

Working Mac (either a VM, Virtualbox or any mac that can run diskutility, or you can try ibooting to the original SL dvd and try using its Disk Utility to make your custom USB bootable flash/disk drive, you need to make the usb key cause there are some tricks to use your existing partition scheme with Windows and install to MBR instead of on a GUID based partition as the DVD will try to )

Step1. From a working MAC build your USB bootable drive. Insert your OSX retail dvd as well.

Most USB flash drives are formatted for use with Windows. Before you can install OS X on a USB flash drive, you will need to change the drive’s formatting to the standard used by OS X (Mac OS X Extended Journaled).

Insert the USB flash drive into your Mac’s USB port.

Launch Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/.

In the list of drives attached to your Mac, select the USB flash drive or USB HDD.

Click the ‘Partition’ tab.

Select ‘1 Partition’ from the Volume Scheme dropdown menu.

Enter a descriptive name for your flash drive; I chose Boot Tools.

Select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) from the Format dropdown menu.

Click the ‘Options’ button.

Select ‘GUID Partition Table’ from the list of available partition schemes.

Click ‘OK.’

Click the ‘Apply’ button.

A sheet will drop down, warning you that you are about to erase all data from the disk. Click ‘Partition.’

Disk Utility will format and partition your flash drive.

From the list at the left pane, select and drag the “DVD mounted – Should say something like Snow Leopard Install” volume to the field labeled “Source” at the right pane.

Again from the list at the left pane, drag the volume “Your Just Created In Steps Above” to the field labeled “Destination” at the right pane. Click on the Restore button. This will take some time; wait until Disk Utility completes restoring the Snow Leopard Retail DVD image to the “USB Key/HDD” volume.

Quit Disk Utility.

Step 2. Preparing USB key to allow for installation of Snow Leopard on MBR partition (make sure you got a empty/free partition formatted or non-formatted via windows else without an empty or available partition to install OSX on you are stuck). This step can be skipped if you want to install Snow Leopard on a new HDD or have already a GUID partitioned system. But if you need to get SL on MBR windows partitioned drive you need to do this step. Step works for 10.6.3, for 10.6.0 visit : http://osx86.sojugarden.com/downloads/#osinstall , also the files i have linked above are from same site.

Download : OSInstall.mpkg >> http://osx86.sojugarden.com/files/MBROSInstallMOD/OSInstall.mpkg.10.6.zip for 10.6 SL.

Download: OSInstall >> http://osx86.sojugarden.com/files/MBROSInstallMOD/OSInstall.Framework.10.6.zip >> for 10.6 SL

And as the site mentions you need to do this for those files (on your USB Key you created in Step 15 above):

OSInstall.mpkg

OSInstall.mpkg modified to enable installation on MBR partitioned disks. – Replace /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg with this file.

OSInstall

OSInstall framework modified to enable installation on MBR partitioned disks. – Replace /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall with this file.

For 10.6.3 you need the following files and instructions are same as for 10.6 above.

These two files are required for installation of OS X 10.6.3 on MBR partitioned disks.

OSInstall.mpkg

OSInstall.mpkg modified to enable installation on MBR partitioned disks. – Replace /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg with this file.

OSInstall

OSInstall framework modified to enable installation on MBR partitioned disks. – Replace /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall with this file.

After you have done the mbr patching to your usb bootable SL installation Key you need to boot your laptop using the iBoot bootable CD while the USB key you created is plugged in. iBoot might not recognize the installation USB first time around so just reset computer using Ctrl+Alt+Del , do not do a power reset. Now on the iBoot menu you will see your USB key to install Snow Leopard, choose it and hit enter to launch the installation. On installation screen after agreeing to various agreements, go to disk utility and format your “free available partition you created prior to booting into SL installation ” . Format as Extended Journaled, the very first option from dropdown. After its formatted close disk utility and proceed with installation selecting the recently formatted partition, the rest of the drives will have a yellow exclamation mark and wont allow you to select those drives, only the newly formatted drive will be selectable to install SL on. Complete the installation process as you would normally for SL.

After installation is complete it should say it has successfully installed, if not you might still be able to boot into the SL but I had to do few installation before I was able to boot into the Mac OS using the iBoot CD. Reboot the machine after installation completes, remove the usb key and boot via iBoot and select the OSX from the iBoot menu. It should boot properly into the newly installed Snow Leopard, if not like i mentioned you will need to go through few installations till you get it right, not sure why that happens but it did not let me go into the freshly installed SL right away. Once you are all up and running with SL, do the combo update to latest SL version, 10.6.6 at the time of this article. Do not reboot after installation has completed, install Multibeast again available from Tony’s site where you got the iBoot media. Only install the enablers and under softwares/utilties install the Kext Utility as you will need it to get your laptop working properly with right drivers.

Once you have done above steps and are up and running without using the iBoot cd and are able to succesfully login to SL after each reboot, download the kexts files i have provided (from various sources i was able to grab the right ones that actually worked) and install them all. Basically only Audio/Video and Keyboard Fix kexts are required as they would be the ones not working. What you can trying doing is (I have not tried this yet, is to put these kexts files in your usb bootable SL and replace the old ones with these, it should be similar to what you are going to be doing now anyways). Your keyboard and touchpad might not work right away after you login the first time to snow leopard when you boot of Multibeast and not with iBoot, so you have an option here to either plugin in that extra usb keyboard or mouse or you can boot off iBoot

More to be continued need to head out…… Will update later tonight.

For those suffering from sleep issues with the laptop, that is on clicking sleep machine goes into unsable state and after reboot will not reboot and requires permission fix. Try setting hibernate mode to 0 to do so these are the commands.

In terminal window type :

pmset -g | grep hibernate

Will give you current status of how hibernation/sleep is taking place by default it is set to 3. You will need to change it to 0 instead.

This should return one of the following:

* 0 – Legacy sleep mode. It will save everything to RAM upon sleeping but does not support “Safe Sleep”. Very fast sleep.
* 1 – Legacy “Safe Sleep”. This is the “Safe Sleep”. Everything your laptop goes into sleep, it will save everything to harddisk. Slow on Sleep and Startup.
* 3 – Default. As described above, when sleeping, contents are saved to RAM. When battery runs out, hibernate occurs.
* 5 – Behaves as 1 but applicable only for modern Mac that uses “Secure virtual memory”.
* 7 – Behaves as 3 but applicable only for modern Mac that uses “Secure virtual memory”.

Type this command to switch to 0 state.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

Now disable the Lid Sleep and Wake feature

Check status of lidwake by typing

pmset -g | grep lidwake

Set it to 0 , sudo pmset -a lidwake 0

This will disable the sleep/wake feature when opening or closing the lid.

Anyways had problems making the device talk to my Windows 7 (64 bit) because of driver issues, windows tries to install the drivers but they do not work. Download the driver for nokia bh-105 headset below , unzip it and browse to the folder when searching for driver on local drive. Worked like a charm without any issues. Now have bluetooth enabled headset that will work with Skype, Yahoo or Google voice/call etc..

Happy new year to everyone since this is my first post for 2011.

Facebook users are shall I say it in polite manner “too lazy” who think quitting Facebook is the right option. First of all, really does Joseph Dee and Milan have nothing better than to do than launch a site asking users to pledge to quit Facebook (that was yesterday May 31)? From what I make of it both are apparently involved with websites and are web developers, so if the going gets tough do they just quit and ask people to follow their footsteps? I do not see one good reason why to quit facebook, well maybe the annoying advertisements (for that there is adblock fix (to some extend can get rid of annoying dating ads atleast…)

Quitting facebook today are you? Ever thought of actually spending some time say like 5 mins… (took me only 5 mins.) to modify my facebook privacy settings. Or would you rather join the quitters league and say bye bye to facebook ? If personally I was Joseph or Milan instead of asking everyone to quit, I rather be helping everyone better understand how to keep their facebook profiles private and for friends only and no even for “Friends of Friends”, facebook does have options to disallow friends of friends from seeing your photos, wall posts , relationship status and what not. Not many I think are aware that you have privacy setting to even disable your friends looking at your friends list, it could be made viewable only for yourself. For this option just go to Account>Privacy Settings > Friends, Tags and Connections and there for Friends options select from dropdown Custom, and in there you can specify who should be able to see you friends, say xyz or abc friends only or just yourself. Not that hard to understand how privacy settings work.

There are lots of other options available too to keep your important profile details private. If we were only smart enough to understand the working of facebook, and use it wisely the day for quitting facebook would not be required. I am not a big fan of facebook myself, but it has helped me at times connecting with friends when I needed to. IF you are too scared of your personal information being on the web, well what made you join facebook in the first place? And if you are putting your bank information and other personal details are just too freaking personal well sorry to say this but you might as call yourself a web idiot. Did you know on facebooks signup page, you can just fudge the details if you wish to just have a facebook page ? Who is going to sue you for fudging the details that facebook asks? Facebook is not a site where you need to have correct information. You can always ask your friends to find you on facebook by certain keyword or details that you fudged into facebook. IF you are concerned about email address, well yahoo, gmail and other email provides give you options to make accounts (again can have fake info there too) to make free email addresses. For example I just signed up on facebook using fake information and some email address that I use only for spam collection and for such sites that require your email address. Guess what I just signed up on facebook with ID : James Bondy, sadly facebook did not let me join as James Bond . Feel free to add me on your facebook account and check out the tight privacy control settings I have set in place.

Above is just an example, if you enjoy the facebook games and want to just get updates of your friends, there is not another better way than to “make up” a facebook profile and start adding the friends you know of and let them know who you are so they do not deny the request J.
Feel free to look at the video, it shows you basic settings for privacy options that should help protect your profile from prying eyes. But do note this id might get deleted by Facebook if they care about collecting real information. If not go ahead and add James Bondy (with college / school selected as Random and location as London UK ) I shall put an E as my Profile Picture to distinguish my id from the rest.

Google has got crazy ideas up its sleeve, i would have never imagined there would be a pacman logo on any site ever. But go to Google today and enjoy a game of pacman, comes with sound too . Interestingly enough, it’s not flash based so playable on smartphones that do not support flash i guess ? Sorry i do not have a cell phone even so cannot comment if it works on it too or not.But if you are an owner of a smartphone do give it a shot.

Google PacMan who would have ever thought of that one ?

Update: Google PacMan logo does not work on iPhone ! Hmm.. i did imagine it would work, but asked a friend to try using his iphone to browse googel. Sadly, no pacman ! O well… that is one reason why one should always be a proud owner of a PC .

Good thing google did not make a “insert coin” here slot, that would be hard to implement with current technologies.

Just fed up with people who send out emails with the to field populated with tons of email addresses and your address being one of them. That is how spam spreads in ones inbox !

So, if you are sending a common email out to bunch of people please for the sake of every one’s privacy do not use TO field use BCC field instead, and in the TO field insert undisclosed recipients or if that is too hard just insert your email address in there.

I have been a victim of those sending bulk emails to random people and using the TO field instead of BCC . By the way BCC = Blank Carbon Copy for those who do not understand the terminology and CC = Carbon Copy (do not use this either as it will be show still to the end users )

So please respect the privacy of individuals and help them fight spam in their inbox by adopting the proper method for sending emails. I learned it the hard way, let’s hope its not too late for you !

Other things not to do when sending such emails is : “Forgetting to actually insert any message” and than sending another set of bulk emails say “Ooopps” and third one with the actual message. Some do not have time to check their emails that often and they usually skim over most email.

One more thing, make sure when using a newsletter script to use BCC over CC or TO. Most do not realize this that some newsletter script might send bulk emails using the TO field.

If as a reader of this post you have experienced this kind of situation do share your experience and tips too that will help reduce global spamming of in-boxes.

Have been browsing Freelancer for a while now trying to get on the board to get some reviews but seems like fierce competition exists; even when you offer your web development services for free, they pick someone offering same for $100 but with atleast 8 reviews. Since, myself don’t have any reviews yet (since no one offers any new comers a job (just like in real work too i suppose) how ironic is that ? ) am just browsing it daily to see what sort of projects i can do in my spare time and over the weekend to make some extra bucks and get more experience under my belt .

So, it’s now a week or so since i joined freelancer, and I have seen pretty crazy projects that actually someone is willing to do ? Ok let me give you some examples :

Someone asking for geniune email accounts (nothing randomly created) and usable email accounts for $30, nothing strange there you might be thinking ? Well how does the number of 2000 sound to you ? That’s right users asking for 2000 email accounts, nothing that looks like abc1 , abc2 etc etc. real non botish looking emails, 2000 in total for $30. On top of that, guess what is the time limit for project to be completed ?48 HOURS ! Talk about employing Superman for $30/48 hrs or $0.6/hr rate

It’s not done yet hold on what’s this, o if you guessed a Bidder, than you win (—–insert your imaginary prize here i suppose —) ! 3 bidders in total willing to work on the project, now personally i could not achieve that goal within 48 hours maybe 10×48 hours , depending on the username availablity of when gmail, yahoo or other emails figure out that i am trying to make too many acounts with them

Freelancer = outsourcing it seems like today. No one willing to pay handsomely for their projects and above all no one will to hire anyone without “ratings” even when they offer them free services, I have offered like 5 free services for 5 jobs, but nope they pick somone with rating. My goal these days is to get on the board and get some rating, so if anyone reading this blog post, got some job related to the web and freelancer account (or not don’t really matter) give me a shout, so instead of watching tube and killing time can actually do more projects and enjoy the extra cash (i guess to do more projects one can use better and faster pc or maybe bigger 42 inch lcd screen —that be sweet now )

Happy bidding to those on Freelancer, but seriously guys give those noobs with no reviews a chance atleast when they willing to do the job for no charge ! Shows the level of trust one has in this competitive world

UPDATE: Great exhausted all my bids for the month offered out of those 30 bids 5 to 10 to work for no charge but review . Sadly no return, what has world come to ? Who says no to “Free stuff” ! Anyways will search more next month, for this month i guess i am done, not going to pay $15 fee for gold membership = unlimited bidding a month ( nice money leeching method). Will google more for such sites i suppose, maybe try ebay lol ?
